I finally got to experience a new country outside of staying at a resort! I 100% recommend experiencing countries (and even cities in the US) outside of the tourist areas. That’s the only way to truly experience a new place.
For my 27th birthday, I originally wanted to go to Costa Rica, but since everything is crazy expensive, after changing the trip a million times we chose Panama.

The reason I travel is for the experience. Each country, city, and state are unique in their own ways, but international travel is the most rewarding. Living in America, there are lots of people doing fairly well, but visiting countries where people may not even make $5 an hour is very humbling. You start to appreciate the multitude of things we, as Americans, have access to. In Cancun, I felt a glimpse of the Mexican culture. We tried different foods (Pescadillas, shark meat, was my favorite) and listened to Spanish music. I even learned a little more Spanish. Travel can be costly, but why spend money on material things when you can spend money on an experience? Plus, it forces us to venture outside of our comfort zone. The best of you never grows inside your comfort zone!

This was not my first time abroad; I visited Mexico City in 2014. But this was my first time in South Africa. If my memory serves me correctly, the first time I seriously contemplated going on this trip with En Root was around August 2019. I had been in conversation and prayer with one of the co-founders of En Root about going on the trip around early or late May 2019, but at that time I had just left a job and was not working full time. So, like I said, when I first heard about the trip, I had no other option but to leave it in prayer (lol) because of the way my money was set up. When August rolled around and I spoke with one of the co-founders about the trip again, I fully decided to commit because despite what I had originally thought, I was in a position to afford the trip (because God is good)!

There are always similarities, but it’s very interesting to know about something specific that happened in Charlotte, NC from things left behind by those who have paved the way for us. When I attended Central State University, African American history was a required course (which I believe is true of every HBCU).
